Devotional: Honour the Name of Jesus

Why the name of Jesus should be honoured

One of the most powerful tools in our Christian walk is the name of Jesus. Yet, many believers today have reduced it to a mere exclamatory phrase, using it casually in conversations without recognizing its divine authority. The name of Jesus is not just a collection of letters; it is the name that is exalted above every other name. It is the name that causes principalities and powers to bow and the only name that grants us access to the throne of God.
In contrast, followers of other religions go to great lengths to honour the names of their leaders. Muslims, for instance, hold the name of their prophet, Mohammed, in high regard and will go to extreme measures to defend its honour. As Christians, we are called to live peacefully, but we must also recognize that we are commanded to honour the name of Jesus in every aspect of our lives. The power of the name of Jesus works effectively when we revere and uphold it with the respect it deserves.

The way Christians honour the name of Jesus will also determine how others will honour the name. If we treat the name with dishonour, we shouldn’t act surprised when unbelievers do the same.

The name of Jesus is the key to our God-given heritage. Here are 10 things the name of Jesus.

1. Salvation – The name of Jesus brings salvation to all who call upon it in faith. (Acts 4:12 – “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”)
2. Healing – The name of Jesus carries healing power, restoring health to the sick and broken. (Acts 3:6 – “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”)
3. Deliverance – Demons flee at the mention of the name of Jesus, bringing deliverance to those oppressed. (Mark 16:17 – “In my name they will drive out demons.”)

• Have you been using the name of Jesus carelessly or thoughtlessly in your speech?
• Have you experienced a lack of power when calling on His name?
• Could the seeming inefficacy be due to dishonour or a lack of reverence for His name?
