5 practical ways of identifying and walking in godly counsel

Psalm 1:1 tells us, “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.” This verse sets the tone for a life of deliberate Christian living, urging believers to seek and follow godly counsel for a blessed life. But what does it mean to walk in godly counsel, and how can we identify godly counsel apply this principle in our daily lives?

What is Godly Counsel?

Many say ideas rule the world, but I will say counsel rules the world. We are currently in the age of information overload. Social media amongst other digital platforms has given the mic to everyone and sadly, everyone now acts like an authority even when they know nothing about what they are saying. There is also the challenge of everyone assuming they know because they have watched a one minute reel or skit. We now have a huge disregard for thorough study, research, tarrying in the Lord’s presence and receiving revelation from the Holyspirit.

From pulpit to television channels, radio stations, YouTube channels, Facebook pages, groups, reels, stories, podcasts, adverts and more, counsel is being dished out as we click, subscribe, follow, like, share and download. Some look and sound godly but they are not, some are outrightly ungodly but they enjoy great PR. There is an urgent need for Deliberate Christians to know what godly counsel is and how to identify it.

Godly counsel is advice and guidance that aligns with the teachings and principles found in the Bible. It comes from those who live according to God’s Word and who exhibit the fruits of the Spirit. Godly counsel helps us make decisions that honor God, reflect Christ’s character, and lead us toward a closer relationship with Him. Godly counsel guides us to make godly decisions while ungodly counsel leads to ungodly decisions. The counsel we follow today will have far reaching effect on the course of our lives. Being able to identify godly counsel is a requirement for a blessed life.

Characteristics of Godly Counsel:

  1. Biblical Foundation: It is rooted in Scripture.
  2. Christ-centered: It points us to Jesus and His example.
  3. Spirit-led: It is inspired by the Holy Spirit.
  4. Wise and Discerning: It reflects spiritual maturity and wisdom.
  5. Loving and Truthful: It is delivered with love and honesty.

How to Identify Godly Counsel

Identifying godly counsel requires discernment and a solid understanding of Scripture. Here are some practical steps to help you recognize true godly advice:

1. Measure Against Scripture

Does the counsel align with Biblical teachings? Godly advice will never contradict the Word of God. Cultivate a quiet time routine of studying and meditating on the word of God to better recognize this alignment. (Joshua 1:8)

2. Consider the Source

Who is giving the advice? Look at their life and character. Are they living in accordance with Christian values? Seek counsel from mature Christians who exhibit the fruits of the Spirit.

3. Pray for Discernment

Ask God for wisdom and clarity. James 1:5 encourages us to seek God’s wisdom, promising that He gives generously to those who ask.

4. Look for Confirmation

God often confirms His guidance through multiple sources. Be attentive to how God might be speaking through different people, Scriptures, and circumstances.

How Can a Christian Walk in Godly Counsel?

Walking in godly counsel is a daily commitment. Here are some ways to integrate godly counsel into your life:

1. Regularly Study the Bible

Immerse yourself in God’s Word. The more you study the word of God, the easier it will be to recognize godly counsel. Make Bible study a daily habit.

2. Seek Mentorship

Find a godly mentor or join a discipleship group like Deliberate Christian Prayer Chain . Surrounding yourself with mature Christians provides a steady source of wisdom and guidance.

3. Be Active in Church

Engage in your local church community. Attend services, participate in small groups, and build relationships with fellow believers who can offer support and counsel.

4. Pray Continually

Build and maintain a strong prayer life. Regular communication with God helps you stay aligned with His will and more receptive to His guidance.

5. Practice Accountability

Be accountable to someone you trust. Sharing your struggles and decisions with a fellow believer provides support and ensures that you remain on the right path.

Conclusion

Walking in godly counsel is essential for living a blessed life. By seeking advice rooted in Scripture, being discerning, and surrounding yourself with mature Christians, you can navigate life’s challenges with wisdom and grace. Remember, “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,” but finds delight in the law of the Lord. Embrace this promise and strive to live a deliberate Christian life.
