Devotional: Honour the Name of Jesus - February, 2025

Why the name of Jesus should be honoured

One of the most powerful tools in our Christian walk is the name of Jesus. Yet, many believers today have reduced it to a mere exclamatory phrase, using it casually in conversations without recognizing its divine authority. The name of Jesus is not just a collection of letters; it is the name that is exalted above every other name. It is the name that causes principalities and powers to bow and the only name that grants us access to the throne of God.
In contrast, followers of other religions go to great lengths to honour the names of their leaders. Muslims, for instance, hold the name of their prophet, Mohammed, in high regard and will go to extreme measures to defend its honour. As Christians, we are called to live peacefully, but we must also recognize that we are commanded to honour the name of Jesus in every aspect of our lives. The power of the name of Jesus works effectively when we revere and uphold it with the respect it deserves.

The way Christians honour the name of Jesus will also determine how others will honour the name. If we treat the name with dishonour, we shouldn’t act surprised when unbelievers do the same.

10 things the name of Jesus does

The name of Jesus is the key to our God-given heritage. Here are 10 things the name of Jesus.

1. Salvation – The name of Jesus brings salvation to all who call upon it in faith. (Acts 4:12 – “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”)
2. Healing – The name of Jesus carries healing power, restoring health to the sick and broken. (Acts 3:6 – “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”)
3. Deliverance – Demons flee at the mention of the name of Jesus, bringing deliverance to those oppressed. (Mark 16:17 – “In my name they will drive out demons.”)
4. Authority Over Darkness – The name of Jesus gives believers authority over the works of the enemy. (Luke 10:17 – “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name!”)
5. Access to God – Through the name of Jesus, we have direct access to God in prayer. (John 14:13 – “Whatever you ask in My name, this I will do.”)
6. Protection – The name of Jesus provides a stronghold of protection against harm and danger. (Proverbs 18:10 – “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”)
7. Victory – By the name of Jesus, we overcome challenges and experience victory in life. (1 Corinthians 15:57 – “But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”)
8. Forgiveness of Sins – The name of Jesus brings forgiveness and cleansing from all unrighteousness. (Acts 10:43 – “Everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”)
9. Peace – Calling on the name of Jesus brings supernatural peace in troubled times. (John 14:27 – “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.”)
10. Transformation – The name of Jesus has the power to change lives, renewing hearts and minds. (2 Corinthians 5:17 – “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new is here!”)

Honouring the name of Jesus in our lives allows us to fully experience these powerful benefits.

Take a moment to reflect on your attitude toward the name of Jesus

• Have you been using the name of Jesus carelessly or thoughtlessly in your speech?
• Have you experienced a lack of power when calling on His name?
• Could the seeming inefficacy be due to dishonour or a lack of reverence for His name?

If any of these resonate with you, take a step back and repent of any misuse or dishonour. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you honour the name of Jesus in your daily life and speech.

Lord Jesus, I acknowledge that I have not always honoured your name as I should. I repent of every careless use of your powerful name and ask for Your forgiveness. Holy Spirit, help me to honour the name of Jesus with reverence and faith, understanding its authority and power. Teach me to call on His name with honour, expectation and trust. In Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen.
