How to be a Spiritual parent to your biological child

A spiritual parent is someone who births and nurtures an individual in the spirit alongside guiding them in the physical realm to walk in and fulfil God’s purpose for their lives.

A person’s biological parent can also be their spiritual parent if the parent is spiritually awake and deliberate. It is a blessing to have one’s biological parent as a spiritual parent.

While this is rare, it is something all deliberate Christians should aspire to be to their children.

‘When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.

13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.

14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.

16 He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God.

17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” – Luke 1:12 -17

Zechariah was one parent amongst many others in the Bible, who was both a biological and spiritual parent to his son, John.

He was able to assume both roles because of his relationship with God. He was a devout priest whose life and service honoured God.

Being able to impregnate a woman is not what makes any man a father

Being able to carry a foetus in your womb is also not what makes any woman a mother.

Deliberate Christian, being a spiritual parent starts with being a totally submitted child of God in word and deed. It entails walking in God’s plan and purpose for your life and guiding your child into doing the same .

No aspect of a child’s life should be trivalized. All must steered by God’s will.

If I may ask, who gave your child(ren) their name(s)? Social media? Did you name yours after your favourite celebrity? Are your children bearing their names because they sound touché?

Are you forming a pattern with their names?

While these questions might seem intrusive, your answers to them reveal if you are a spiritual parent or not? You would be surprised at the funny reasons parents of this generation give their children certain names.

Some parents even engage in child naming competitions for bragging sake. Sadly, some Christians also do this.

Before I go further, this post is not for everyone. It is for those who consider themselves deliberate Christians. Those who know that when God names a thing it carries God’s authority.

Those who know names are not ordinary. Can God trust you to partner with him to fulfil his purpose in the life of the child he has given to you?

If you have been challenged by this post, it is not too late to make amends. Go to God in repentance and ask Him to forgive you. Now, is a good time to hand your children over to him regardless of their ages and how far they might have strayed from Him.

To be a spiritual parent to your child, you must be a spiritual child to God and deliberately seek his help to parent your child(ren) every step of the parenting journey.
